Are the roads you travel every day safe? Or are they prone to deadly accidents?
Most of us drive every day to work, to run errands, or on trips. Whether we are alone or with our friends and families, we all want to arrive safely.
So how can we be sure we are taking the safest routes? How do we know when we are driving through a poorly-designed intersection that has a track record for being an accident site?
There is a great website available that can help you figure this out. It's called SafeRoadMaps.
SafeRoadMaps let's you type in your address to see where every local vehicle fatality has occurred. You'll also learn such details as whether the driver was speeding or intoxicated.
The purpose of the website, created by the Center for Excellence in Rural Safety (CERS), is to make people aware of dangerous roads and intersections. The hope is that they will take alternate routes - or, if that's not possible, will at least be more cautious when driving in high-fatality areas.
I tried it with a few routes that I drive here in Indianapolis and found all sorts of interesting data on accidents in my area.
If you're concerned about keeping your vehicle, your family, and/or yourself safe then this might be a good site to check in on regularly.
